Chapter 31

In the last chapter in "To Kill a Mockingbird", starts with Boo Raudly leaving and saying goodbye to Boo. She mentions a serious of events through out the book that happened and that Boo Raudly must have seen everything that had happened. She remembers what Atticuss lesson on how you don't know that person till you walk in their shoes. Atticuss stays by Jem's bed and grabs a book called the Gray ghost and the story seems to be a lot like Boo Raudly. Boo Raudly always seemed like a bad guy that no one ever saw but he turned out to be really nice. It ends with a nice image of Atticuss by his son's side in cause he wakes up. It also shows how family is a big deal and the right from wrong takes place. Atticuss never gave up on what he believed was the right thing to do. Scout is still immature but a little less immature towards the end of the novel. The biggest problem here is racism and how people would chose wrong from right based on the color of their skin. I really like the way it ended I felt like I also learned the lessons Scout actually now understood towards the end.   

Chapters 29 & 30

In chapter 29 in "To Kill a Mockingbird", it starts off with Atticuss asking Scout to tell him what had happened. She explains how they heard noises and how Bob grabbed her but she felt someone grab him down. She started to look for Jem which was on the floor. They look at their injures and realize that her costume saved her life. Scout looks at Jem and describes how pale and delicate he looks. They now realize that it was Bob, he was drunk and they can't believe that he was willing to kill kids. Then they also find out that Boo Raudly saved them that night. Boo was the one who carried Jem home.
In chapter 30, it is a little confusing but it is basically about how killed or how did Bob die. What we do know that there are two knifes involved a kitchen knife and a blade. Boo Raudly is now uncovered and is there. The problem here is figuring that out they come to a solution saying that Bob fell on his knife. The truth is that Boo since he is so used to being in the dark ran out stabbed Bob and dragged Jem home. In this chapter we find out more about the title of the book. Where "To Kill a Mockingbird" is now a saying that Boo was a spared mockingbird. At the end you can also realize that Atticuss thanked Boo meaning that Atticuss knew that Boo had killed Bob to save his kids, but neither the sheriff nor Atticuss said anything to defend Boo and to clear Jem's name.   

Chapters 27 & 28

In chapter 27 in "To Kill a Mockingbird", there were a few accidents going on in town and Bob still holds a grudge. He gets involved in some miss-haves. Then the kids have to attend a pageant at the high school where Scout was going to dress as a ham. Jem and Scout on  their way to the school where they walk to everyday but the chapter ends with some foreshadowing with the line this might be the longest journey me and Jem might take.
In chapter 28, they are on their way and they pass by the Raudly house. They make it to the high school and they each go hang out with their friends and they ride some rides. Later they get called up to the pageant and Scout rips her costume and they help her out. The pageant is over and they get offered a ride but Jem passes since they only live around the corner. They start walking home but it is dark and they can't really see anything. They get into some trouble and Scout just remembers being thrown to the ground and it seemed there were a few men, which were drunk. Then they make out of all the rolling around scout sees a man pull Jem to the house and Jem is unconscious and Scout's costume is ruined. there is a lot of mystery of what happened the only thing we know is that Jem's elbow is twisted but they are both okay. They call the police so they can investigate the scene and they just find Bob dead with a knife in him. Since this was in Scout's point of view we don't know yet exactly what happened. 

Chapters 25 & 26

In chapter 25 in "To Kill a Mockingbird", is a short chapter, it is basically about Atticuss and Carponia going to Tom's house. They go break the news to his wife and how she just falls to the floor as if someone stepped on her. They mention how the people who killed him simple forgot that he was an innocent man, who got taken from his family and wasn't given a second chance. 
In chapter 26, it starts off with Scout being at school and they start to talk about Adolf Hitler and how they would learn more about it in high school. Scout feels uncomfortable about knowing how someone can hate someone that much. Then she realizes that her teacher hates Hitler for doing that to the Jews but yet is racist against black people. Scout thinks that is weird to think that way. Scout talks to Jem about that but he gets upset and kicks her out of his room, she walks away and goes to Atticuss. Atticuss tells her that he is having a hard time and that he needs to think over things but he will be back to himself.    

Chapters 23 & 24

In chapter 23, "To Kill a Mockingbird", it starts of with Atticuss reaction to being spit on by Bob, they tell him that he should watch out and do something about it. Atticuss claims that a person like Bob just wanted to have the last word and he had nothing to worry about. Then Atticuss says that Tom still had a chance at his appeal and if not he would go to the chair. Jem didn't think it was fair for that to happen, Aticuss tells Jem that when he gets older he will understand and that he shouldn't worry. 

In chapter 24, it starts off with Dill wanting to know how to swim before summer is over and Jem takes him out to teach him. Scout stays home and and gets dressed to attend a tea gathering with a group of white hypocritical people. They come from many churches and Scout starts to talk to some of the ladies. She listens to what they are saying and they are such Hippocrates. They claim to be christian but their racism and hippacracy are not what a christian really is. Scout says that the life of women is a lot more complicated then with being with men. Then Atticuss tells Carponia that Tom tried to escape and was shot 17 times. There we find out that Tom decided to take it into his own hands and they took it a little over board.      

Chapters 21 & 22

In chapter 21, "To Kill a Mockingbird", its starts of with Carponia gives a letter to Atticuss saying that the kids haven't been seen but they realize they have been seating in the colored area. They are sent home to eat and Atticuss lets them come back to see if Atticuss has won the trail. When they come back they find out that nothing has changed and they are glad that they haven't missed a thing. The jury has been out for about three hours now and Jem is happy that its taking so long but Scout is not. The jury comes back and everyone claims that Tom is guilty. Atticuss gets tense every time they say guilty but realize that they took a long time to decide that. They took a tribute to Atticuss since he tried his best to defend Tom Robinson. We can realize that racism does change things in these times.
in chapter 22, it starts out with them leaving the court house which Jem is crying and yelling that it is not right. Atticuss tells him that no it is not right but they have done it before and they will continue to do so. The next morning Atticuss is called to the table for breakfast and sees a table full of food. Carponia says that it was a gift from the black community, saying thanks for what he did. Atticuss tears up and tells Carponia to tell them not to do it again because it is a difficult economic time, in the great depression. Jem is taking this harder then Scout since Jem is older and becoming more mature. Ms. Maudy says that someone should really step up and defend what he believes in, directing to Jem. At the end of the chapter Atticuss is spit at by Bob, he says that he will get Atticuss if it were the last thing he'll do.     

Chapters 19 & 20

In chapter 19, "To Kill a Mockingbird", it starts of with Atticuss calling up Tom Robinson. We find out things about Tom Robinson and he had served time in jail because this one guy tried to cut him and since he couldn't pay the fee he served his time. He has nothing to hide which is good and he claims that it is true that he helped her with the dresser. He claims that that wasn't the first nor the last time he went over to help. He would go over every time she needed help she would ask him to and he would her free of charge. He claims that he would help her because he noticed that she didn't get much help from her family. Then he gives his side of the story and says that the so called victim called him over to her house and tried to kiss Tom. Then her dad sees her and calls her a hore and at that point Tom runs away because he is scared. What I understand from chapter is that Tom is telling the truth but no one believes him because he is black. His word would have a disadvantage against a white mans word. We can see how Atticuss is at a difficult situation to defend Tom. 
In chapter 20, it starts off with Raymond, the white guy who only hangs out with black people, he also drinks from a coke bottle which they think it has alcohol in it. He gives some to Dill because his stomach got upset from listening the people in court. They then find out that it is just plain coke. Raymond tells them not to mention it to anyone or else his reputation would get ruined. At this point in court Atticuss claims that the evidence is clear that Tom is innocent but since Tom has his word against two white people, it is difficult for him to be free. Atticuss quotes Tomas Jefferson that everyone should be created equal and that the judge should do the right thing and that racism shouldn't take place here and that they should tell the truth.        

Chapters 17 & 18

In chapter 17, in "To Kill a Mockingbird", It starts of at the court and they call up the sheriff to give his testimony. The sheriff explains that Bob walked in into the sheriff's office claiming that his daughter was raped by an African American. He explains to him that she was lying on the floor pretty beat up and when he helped her up they her who did this to you and did he take advantage of you and she said it was Tom Robinson and he did take advantage of me. The sheriff just gives the facts of what he remembered of that day. Atticuss asks them severe times if they called a doctor, they answer that it wasn't necessary since he looked fine. The case seems to be unfolded be its self since Atticuss asks questions to Bob, the victim's dad. We find out more about her daughter's injures and how her injures were worse on her right side and that her dad is left handed. All of those clues seem kinda suspicious. Bob which is a rude and disrespectful person seems that no one can blame him for everything and that Tom is the only one to blame. 
In chapter 18, in "To Kill a Mockingbird", it starts off with the victim being asked questions. She claims that she was going to throw an old dresser and that Tom was by and she called him over to do the job for her and that she will give him a nickle. She then explains how he beat her and tried to rape her. Atticuss then starts to ask her about her and her family and we find out that her dad gets drunk a lot. He starts to ask her questions about her dad and if he has ever hit her or anything. She says no and the trail gets a little crazy and confusing because she suddenly forgets details. She then remembers things and we find out that her story doesn't match her dad's story. She is obviously lying. We also find out that Tom is crippled from his left arm. The court takes a break and Atticuss is asked to question his only victim.    

Chapters 15 & 16

In chapter 15 of "To Kill a Mockingbird", this a very important chapter of the novel. This chapter starts of with the trial that Atticuss is going to go through. One day there was there was a knock on the door and it a sheriff standing outside of Atticuss yard. He just wanted to let him know that they are moving Mr. Robinson, the accused to downtown and doesn't know if there will be trouble. Jem is watching as they all talk outside. Atticuss had decided to not get involved to stay out of trouble.  Everyone is giving Atticuss a hard time because he is defending that man. Atticuss is a good person and knows that whatever person he defends he know that he is innocent. Since a lot people don't like him defending a black man he may get himself into trouble and could get hurt. That Sunday night Scout goes and finds Jem, Jem tells her that he is going downtown. To avoid a fight Jem lets Scout come along and of course Dill would want to go as well. Jem claims that he has a feeling to go downtown. They are in downtown and want to go see Walter at the post office but to get there they have to pass by the jail. They notice an unusual light at the jail and they see Atticuss siting down reading, Jem stops Scout and Dill from going to him. They decide to turn around and leave since he is okay but when they are leaving they see four cars pull up at the jail. The men get out of the cars and go up to Atticuss the kids get a closer look without getting seen. Scout then breaks through to get to her dad and then notices is was a bad idea and she can see the fear in Atticuss eyes. Atticuss begs Jem for them to go home but they refuse. Then Walter comes by and breaks the mob. What we can understand from this is that they were there to kill Tom the accused and in a way he then feels guilty. This is just the beginning of this whole case.
In chapter 16 of "To Kill a Mockingbird", we left of that night outside the jail and Scout finally realizes what was going on that day. Everyone is pretty much overwhelmed with the whole situation but Atticuss isn't mad at the kids for sneaking out. He is actually thankful because they saved the night, it just took an eight year old to say just like wild animals humans can be stopped simply because they are human." Later in this chapter they are on their way to court. Since it's the first day of the trial there are a lot of people going as well. The author describes a few people that they see on their way there. The author also gives a brief description of the court house and how everything back then was divided from the whites and the coloreds. In this chapter the actual trial doesn't begin, but we do get to know Atticuss a little more. The whites don't actually believe that Atticuss will defend a black man but since he is they obviously don't like it. This is why he has been getting into trouble and why people are against him. It seems Atticuss doesn't really want to go with what everyone else thinks but what he believes is the right thing.  

Chapters 13 & 14

In "To Kill a Mockingbird" chapter 13, as we know Alexandria is there and we find out Atticus didn't tell them that she was staying. He thought it would be a good idea for her to live with them. He wants her to be around while he deals with his problems. Atticus wants a female instinct since Jem is going through a phase. Alexandria gets along with everyone and knows mostly everyone. The kids don't really see her since they are mostly outside since its summer. Alexandra decides to show them about the family Jem makes a rude comment and they get in trouble by Atticus. Atticus yells at them and wants them to behave as they were raised as good kids. Alexandra could help Scout to be more girly. Atticus really wants the kids to know that the most important thing is what is inside rather then the outside. 
In chapter 14, Scout starts off asking Atticus what rape is and Atticus gives her a very dictionary definition, so Scout still doesn't really understand. She asked him because as we know Carponia didn't want to tell Scout. The whole story about them going to a all afarian american chruch comes up and Atticus is surprised. Then Scout remembered that Carponia told her that she could stay with her anytime. Alexandra obviously says no but Scout talks back and tells her that she didn't ask her. Afterwards Scout and Jem get into a fight and it had to be break-in up by Atticus and they are both sent to their room. While Scout goes in she steps on something weird under her bed and they get a broom to try to see what it could be. As they do so it turns out to be Dill. They let him stay over one night and Dill really wanted to talk to Scout. Atticus in this chapter seems really caring and understanding with everyone as he cares about Dill. Scout doesn't really understand how to get into others people perspective, on how Atticus is feeling, the neglect Dill has from his family, or why Atticus defends Jem. Looking forward to chapter 15, things are going to take a spin.

Chapters 11 & 12

In "How to Kill a Mockingbird" chapter 11, they start off going deeper into the neighborhood where we met Ms. Henry. Ms. Henry lives between the Fiches' house and downtown, she is old and in a wheelchair. She has a women who attends her and her name is Ms. Jesse, Ms. Jesse is black. The kids think that she has a pistol and they get yelled at every time they pass by, she even called Scout an ugly girl. Atticus just tells them to ignore her because she is old and sick,, Atticus knows how to deal with her whenever he passes by. They get into a problem when Jem turns 12 and he want to go downtown and Ms.Henry just wants to get him in trouble. Ms.Henry starts to talk about Atticus and how he is defending a black man. So they go downtown and they come back Ms. Henry isn't home so he loses it and destroys all of her flowers. By doing that he broke Scout's baton and she starts to yell and Jem starts to yell back and pull her hair. When Atticus finds out he gets in trouble. All of this brings everything back to Atticus defending the black man, and they just don't understand. Atticus knows he is doing the right thing and shows how he is as a person or man. He is trying not to make it a big deal and that people who say that word are trashy. The kids end up going to Ms. Henry house just to have Jem read to her. Later on we find out that she passed away and she was a morpheme addict and she didn't want to die an addict and she didn't. The kids then admire her and they think that she was a strong person.
In chapter 12, they start off with Jem getting more frustrated with Scout. Summer comes up again and really wants Dill to come over which he can't and she gets depressed. Atticus goes away for awhile and is really concentrated on work. He worries about them going to church alone so Carponia takes them with her in a all African american church. They don't feel welcomed but they stay and the people)(Revlon) in the church welcome them. Scout talks to him and learns more about his family. Racism is really open in their town. Alexandria at their front church and I think she will be around for a while until Atticus gets back.

Chapters 9 &10

In "To Kill a Mockingbird" chapter 9, it starts out with a fight between Scout and a boy named Cecil Jacobs. Atticus forbid her to fight and at school Cecil said that her dad defended the word "niggers". Scout doesn't know what that means so she asks Atticus and he just tells her that the word is common. Common as in vulgar, low class, inappropriate. then we find out that Atticus is just defending a "negro" Tom Robinson. He has a family down by the town dump and he is also a member of the church. He claims that people are saying that he shouldn't be defending him. He says that he want s to and feels the need to help them out. They get a visit from one of their uncles Atticus sister. Later on Scout starts to use a lot of cuss words to try to convince Atticus to stop sending her to school. 

In chapter 10, they start to talk about Atticus how he is now fifty years old and really doesn't do much but seat at a desk all day and things like that. Now with the whole town talking about him it just makes everything else worse. He doesn't even want to show Jem how to shot an air rifle so he leaves that for their uncle to show them. Then they mention that killing a mockingbird is a sin because mockingbirds don't do anything they just make music for people to enjoy. This is where the book gets it's title. Then they start to talk about Atticis and Miss Maudie explains his skills and then claims that she doesn't really know what he can do. Then it leads to Scout looking at dog acting funny, they find out that the dog has been infected, it has rabies. Then they call Atticus and they have everyone go inside so they don't get bitten by the dog. Then the sheriff comes in and asks well who is going to kill the dog and everyone puts it on Atticus to do so. Everyone doesn't think that he is capable in doing so, until he gets down on his knees and kills the dog. Everyone is in shock and then they find out that Atticus nickname is "one shot finch". He is known as the best shooter in the county. Jem then realizes that his dad is the way that he is and that want s to become just like him.

Chapters 7 & 8

In "To Kill a Mockingbird" chapter 7, Scout notices that Jem is grumpy so she tries to get under his skin to try to understand why he is so grumpy. Scout later understands and concludes that she would also be grumpy if she had sneaked into the Radley house a 2 am. Scout goes back to school she is now in the 2nd grade and again ins't really liking school because she has the same teacher. Her teacher isn't really a good one. Then Scout and Jem start taking about the night where he had left his pants at the Radley house. They start to talk about suspicious things that could of happened and they think someone is hiding around there. In the nut hole they start finding things and they keep them and one day they decide to leave a note. When they wanted to leave it the hole was covered with cement. Jem seems to be really upset and they are wondering why was that way of communication cut off. They now are more curious about what goes on and who was sending them gifts through the nut hole.
In chapter 8, Scout wakes up one morning and freaks out because it is snowing and she had never seen snow before. They get snow day even though it is not snowing a lot but it has been a while since it has snowed so they decided to do that. They all get really excited and decide to built a snowman although there isn't a lot of snow. They all go to Miss Maudie calls them to over to watch their step, she mean whiles covers her plants so they wont freeze. They grab all the snow they can to try to built a snowman and they end up building a dirt man. The next day Atticus wakes up the kids and when they go outside they realize that Miss Maudie's house is on fire. They all everything to try to put the fire out but the weather isn't really helping them out. They leave the house alone since they can't save it at this point. Atticus decides to bring the kids in and then he realizes that Scout has a blanket over her and they predict Boo Radley was the one who put it over her. Atticus wanted to send a thank you note, Jem freaks out and tells him everything and they think that Boo Radley can get in trouble for that so he decides to let it slide. Later Miss Maudie tells everyone that she is alright and doesn't really care about her house, she claims it was to big. 

Chapters 5 & 6

  At the beginning of ¨To Kill a Mockingbird¨ starts with Jem and Dill getting close and changing all the names of the game to make things less obvious. Scout then feels like a third wheel and even tries to get their attention but it doesn't work and they start calling her a girl when she actually is a girl. Then Scout starts to talk to Miss Maudie which is an elderly neighbor and she basically lets the kids play in her yard and eat her grapes. She is also known as a very good baker and whenever she bakes she bakes individual cakes for the kids. She is a widow and also enjoys being outside with her plants. Then they start to gossip about another neighbor Boo Radley which never comes out and they are always interested in nothing if he is still alive. Miss Maudie mentions that the Radleys´ are foot washers which means they take religion way to serious and that everything enjoyable for them is wrong. Then Jem and Dill are planning something and Scout finds that they want to leave a note with a fishing pole through the gutters asking Boo what he does all day. When they do that Atticus finds out and tells them to stop and to leave the Radleys´ alone. he then tricks Jem into telling the truth and decides that he doesn't want to be a lawyer like Atticus.
   In chapter 6, it starts of being the last day of summer and they want to go hang out at Miss Rachel´s fish pool. they meet up there and they start talking about how they are going to miss Dill when he leaves. The next day Scout tells a story about how Mr. Avery peed from his front porch and of course Dill and Jem try to do the same thing which Scout obviously couldn't participate. Then afterward Scout knows something is up when Dill walks toward the Radley house, They try to take a look through the window since it is dark and that no one can see them, Scout doesn't want to go along but since they keep teasing her she went along anyway. They make their way through the yard trying to find a way to look in but them a shadow could be seen and they all see it. All of a sudden a shot gun goes on and they all duck, they try to get out. Then Jem gets stuck and his pants come off, he has to come out like that. So they all go up to the talking neighbors Mr. Radley claims she shot in the air due to a black man in his yard. We don´t know why exactly he assumed he was black I guess just racism, but that claim falls short when they see Jem without his pants. They don´t get in trouble because they change the subject by bringing up gambling. At the end Jem goes back for his pants so he wont get in anymore trouble.

Chapters 3 & 4

In the beginning of chapter 3 in "How to Kill a Mockingbird", it starts out with Scott beating up Walter Cunningham. As you may know The Chunninghams' are poor and they work in the fields picking crops. At the end of chapter 2 and beginning of chapter 3 they mention that Walter doesn't have money for lunch. So, after school Jem invites Walter to dinner, Walter hesitated on going but he ended up going. During dinner, Atticus notices that Walter doesn't eat the way way they do. He tries to correct him and Calpurnia gets mad. She tells him that he is a guest and he should let him anything and in anyway he wants, no matter what his name is. I think that is a really nice thing to do and a nice way to look at things that way. Then, they go back to school where Miss Caroline is their teacher and was in for a surprise in finding a Cootie. I still dislike Miss Caroline because she is really rude and doesn't understand I guess that most of them are poor. In chapter 4, Scott finds out that their system are pretty much cheating them of and he dislikes that. Though there is nothing that they can do about it. Later in the chapter, they find a chewing gum or a least they made him believe that he had found it there. Towards the end of the chapter they started to play a game and it involved the Rally house. At the end Scott ends up rolling in the house, the backyard. The Rally is a scary house for everyone so if they ever step in they think that they may never get out. So I guess we will find out in the next chapter what happens.    

Chapters 1 & 2

In the first two chapters in the book, "How To Kill A Mockingbird," by Harper Lee; it starts of in a small town, I believe. At first reading the first chapter, it's a little boring to me. It starts with introducing a few characters and some towns names in the twentieth century I believe. They mention a lot of weird phrases like, he's a year till senior." I really don't understand what they mean by that, I understand senior like as an elder person or it can also mean senior as in senior year of high school or even college. In the reading though they mention they are young and are barely learning how to read, so maybe I got a little confused. I guess I should read these two chapters again. I did like how the author gives a lot of specific details like, "he was a thin leathery man with colorless eyes, so colorless they did not reflect light." I gave me a specific detail of the person and made it more interesting to read. It also had weird names of the people in this book, that kinda thru me off too. In chapter two it's basically about them going to school and talks about their teacher. I guess I will continue to read this book I'll give it a chance and I guess we'll see what's in store.
